This is really advance notice - but this year KEP is going crazy for Christmas cards! I'm sure some of you have seen my previous designs (if you haven't, please contact me for more information!). My idea is to showcase your year, your family, your photos in a creative and beautiful way for your year-end card.

A lot of people ask about the cards, but usually not until the second week of December. I know it doesn't feel like Christmas in October and November, but it is the perfect time to start planning your card. To jump-start your process, I am going to be offered a reduced design fee this year, during October and the first 2 weeks of November. I'll also offer a $5 discount for referring your friends!

So while it's only June, this time of year does mark a halfway point, and it's not a bad idea to start thinking about what you've done and what you want to portray in your holiday card.

Here is a helpful timeline:

-If you want to have family portraits taken, think early fall, even the end of summer. Portraits take time to edit and turn around to you, and you'll probably want time to choose. Start booking those soon.

-If you are planning on a family event timeline or collage, it's never too early to start a file on your computer for those perfect images.

-You may not have any idea WHAT to do, but that's where I can help! I have a lot of ideas, and I'll tell you what I would do with whatever media you choose to display (yes, even text).

When we get closer I'll post a few more related topics like how to choose compelling photos, what type of card is best for your family, and how the design process will work. Oh! And I'll give you the details on the sale. So stay tuned!!

Custom Birth Announcement

I can't believe I haven't posted this before now...but after taking newborn shots of baby Elizabeth, I was able to create a really fun and innovative birth announcement for parents Katie and Layton. The design featured a fold out card with 4 panels, front and back. When you pull it from the envelope, you see this:

Then you unfold it to see all four panels:

The idea was that the whole card could be nicely spread out on someone's fridge, or it can stand on its own on a coffee table.

For extra impact, we also made use of the back:

You may remember this darling girl from her newborn photos, and she looks SO different now. I had to stop myself from flagging 50% of the pictures as favorites, so I may need to do a few sneak preview posts. There's just a lot going on in this session. You'll see, we have darling E, plus mommy and daddy, grandma, cousin Mason and Auntie Spring, and even Harley (the dog). So stay tuned for more! Yesterday I photographed the beautiful baby Elizabeth. You may remember her mother's maternity session, which occurred only one day before she was born! She is just over a month old and looks just like her mommy and daddy. She has the cutest little button nose, her daddy's dimples and her mommy's eyes, and she loves to smile. She is just precious, and I think you'll agree when you see her...

Yesterday I had the opportunity to photograph handsome Cameron. He graduated from high school and is on his way to college (today!). His mom and I met while getting our hair done and hit it off right away. He brought his "man's best friend," Scarlett, a very well-behaved puppy. I have to say that the ones who tell me they are shy or not photogenic seem to always to show up and then bust out an amazing smile, and Cameron was no exception!

I spent Saturday morning with one of my favorite people, confidant and work-day-lifesaver, Kelly, and her beautiful family. I had not yet met her husband--although I feel like I know him--so that was necessary. :) She has two of the most stunning little girls I have ever seen and a third on the way. Big Bear

I am on vacation (!!) in Big Bear, or for those of you who are not Southern Californians, our local mountain range. It is absolutely gorgeous. I plan on taking quite a few pictures and posting all weekend from the cabin's brand new Wi-Fi!

The rather Halloween-like branches of a charred tree.
Much of this area, near Fawnskin, is still closed since the tragic wildfires of three years ago. Forests of blackened ghost trees remain for miles. In the distance you can see the remains of what appears to have been a brick wall. Firefighters saved most buildings and residences, but unfortunately they had to let most uninhabited areas burn. I am certain that countless animals lost their lives and homes. I wish people would be more careful with their fires! The pine trees should return, as pine cones release their seeds in fire (as evidenced by anyone who has thrown pine cones into a fire) and firefighters have used controlled burns in order to re-forest certain areas.

Sometimes the best portraits happen in the middle of random events. Places, expressions, and clothing are authentic and less forced. The following are some examples.
First, my dad in "weekend" attire at one of his favorite spots to cruise to, Swallows Inn. Next, my husband, with my reflection in his goggles. The backdrop could only have been seen in this magnitude from a ski run on the side of the mountain. His face reflects the fun being had.

Next, my aunt and cousins in an impromptu Christmas day shot.

Lastly my mom, grandmother, uncle, and two aunts; same Christmas day.

For this shot, a fuzzy pink Juicy Couture box had some alluring texture for the background of a sparkly diamond shot.

This was a difficult event to photograph. The restaurant where the party was held was very dark inside, and as I am typically anti-flash it was a challenge for me. The guests of honor wanted family photographs, which we took, as well as some fun candids.
